Hydration tablets – fad or the new way to up your water intake?

Drinking water trends may come and go, but some have the potential to change the way we drink water for good.
Here at Total Soft Water, filtered water will always be our go-to, yet there’s one product on the block that could just become the next best thing.
Hydration tablets are no new thing, yet they’ve been hitting the headlines recently as our busy schedules resume and individuals look for alternative ways to hydrate quickly. But are hydration tablets a fad or are they here to stay?
What are hydration tablets?
Marketed as the ultimate way to hydrate on the go, hydration tablets are fast becoming favourites with high-flying career people and busy parents.
Hydration tablets have long been used within the sports world and fitness industry to restore fluids that have been lost through sweating after an intense training session or workout.
Available in tablet and powder form, hydration tablets are packed full of electrolytes, minerals that actively enhance the balance of bodily fluids.
The latest hydration tablets contain multivitamins to provide a boost of nutrients for the drinker as well as a route to better hydration.
Do electrolytes really work?
Electrolytes are renowned for their hydrating and replenishing properties. Hydration tablets contain electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium, and use these to give the body the hydration it requires. Here Midwife & Life explains how:
“Electrolytes help you hydrate because they are the minerals that control which parts of your body need water the most. That’s how electrolytes help you stay hydrated.
Maintaining optimal fluid balance within cells are also the electrolytes’ responsibility. It’s also the electrolytes’ job to make sure that water inside and outside your cells is properly balanced whenever we sweat.”
Are hydration tablets the same as sports drinks?
Hydrating electrolytes are found in sports drinks, which are another popular product relied on by gym-goers, sportspeople, and professional athletes. But why should you reach for a hydration tablet instead of a sports drink?
Unlike sports drinks, hydration tablets are intended purely for hydration. They don’t contain the carbs and sugars that many sports drinks include to fuel the body and boost performance during exercise.
Why elsewhere should I use hydration tablets?
Hydration tablets are great choices for people from all walks of life and are fast becoming used by people outside the usual group of fitness fanatics.
They can be used every time your body feels dehydrated, and even when you’re ill or feeling a bit delicate after having a bit too much to drink the night before!
If you keep forgetting to drink water, using hydration tablets can give your water the boost it needs to be extra hydrating.
But remember, hydration tablets aren’t water replacements. They’re used with water to improve hydration. In fact, most hydration tablets need to be dissolved in water before they’re consumed.
Achieving the right balance daily, as well as when you need hydration most, is the key to using hydration tablets to your advantage.
