Softened water is kinder to Eczema sufferers’ skin

The water that comes out of your tap can contain chemicals that might be damaging your skin. In 2007 the University of Nottingham conducted a test looking at whether using water softeners would help in the treatment of childhood eczema. The study’s results were an overwhelming ‘yes’. Using water softeners did help eczema sufferer’s skin. Eczema can be a painful condition where sufferers experience dry skin, itching and red blotches. If you or any of your family members suffer from eczema, read on to find out how you can reduce pain and irritation with a simple swap to more friendly filtered water.
Explaining eczema?
Not only does hard water exacerbate eczema, but it can also irritate the skin to the point of causing eczema. The harsh chemicals in hard water are so damaging to your skin that they could be behind you, or your child’s eczema. It is not surprising when you think of the damage that boiling hard water can cause to your kettle!
Revealing research
The calcium and magnesium are severe chemicals, so constantly washing your hair, hands or body in it (let alone drinking it) can, of course, cause damage. During the 2007 University of Nottingham study, the participants reported marked improvement when they switched to softened water.
A softer solution
By purifying your home’s water by having a filter installed, you will not only improve the taste of the water coming from your tap, but you will also notice an improvement in the health of your hair and your skin. In addition to seeing an increase in the lifespan of your home’s appliances, for example, your kettle, washing machine, etc.
The science of skin
The pH balance of skin is normally acidic, however hard water has high alkalinity. This is what disturbs the skin’s ability to function as a physical barrier leaving it prone to potentially harmful bacteria and thus at risk of getting infected. Hard water also prevents wash products from being soluble leading to them settling on the skin. Having a water filter fitted removes impurities, unpleasant odours and chemicals like magnesium, calcium and bicarbonates, resulting in a decreased risk of developing eczema.
Eczema is now recognised as an atopic condition, linking it to asthma and hay-fever. This means that if you have one of those conditions, you are likely to suffer from another or all of them. If you have eczema already then having a water filter fitted is an excellent way to help treat your condition. And if you have one or both of the other atopic conditions, then it is worth you having a water filter fitted to reduce your risk of developing eczema later down the line.
