Why water based beauty products should be a part of your regime

We all know the benefits drinking water can unlock for your skin, but the products you apply are just as important as hydrating from the inside. These days, we’re lucky enough to be able to access a wide range of beauty products that suit our skin care needs and budget.
The beauty products of today have come a long way. Many now offer proven results for several skin types minus the alcohol, parabens, petrochemicals, glycols, silicones, sulphates, and synthetic fragrances, and colours that were the staple ingredients in the products of yesteryear.
Beauty products are ultimately becoming kinder to our skin and the planet. As well as being vegan, vegetarian and cruelty free, many are also getting back to basics with more natural, organic ingredients.
With this, water based formulations have been making a comeback with everything from moisturisers to makeup now predominantly water.
Here we take a closer look at why you should be using water based beauty products to hydrate your skin.
Using the purest water for proven results
Beauty products – such as body lotion, shampoo and conditioner, foundation, mascara, hairspray, self-tanning lotion, nail polish, eyeliner, and anti-ageing serums – all consist mostly of water.
As a result, it’s often the first ingredient you’ll see on the label, with some formulations consisting of 30% water or more. However, this doesn’t mean manufacturers are filling bottles with tap water.
The best beauty brands use distilled water to maximise the success of their products. Distillation removes most of the impurities found in water through boiling and condensing.
With this all manner of metals, salts, and microorganisms are eliminated to reveal water’s purest form. About Face details more about the use of distilled water within the beauty industry:
“Using normal tap water will decrease the quality and lifespan of your products because the water may contain substances or bacteria. This sometimes become(sic) the culprit of skin irritation or other skin problems. Distilled water also(sic) used for cleaning purposes due to its ability to bind dirt and impurities that comes(sic) in contact.
Washing your face with distilled water will improve penetration of products that you use after washing your face. This water is also good to use for cleaning build-ups on your hair.”
Distilled water is so effective that some people have even taken to washing their faces with it to achieve clear skin. Discover the effects of washing with distilled water by reading Christine’s story.
Dehydrated and oily skin becomes a thing of the past
Keeping your skin in tip top condition all comes down to just how hydrated it is. Water based beauty products provide access to even more moisture and your skin will feel the rewards of this directly.
Those with oily skin will benefit most from using water based products. The oil (or sebum as it is often known) produced by the skin is your body’s natural response to insufficient water.
By hydrating with the right water based product you can keep your skin moist, limit oiliness, and reduce common oily skin complaints, like acne breakouts, irritation, and dry patches.
The extra hydration will also give skin a more youthful glow. Hydrated skin is plumper and fills out fine lines and wrinkles to make them less noticeable.
Letting your skin breathe – even in hot weather!
Now is the perfect time to make the switch to water based beauty products. With summer just around the corner, the need to let our skin breathe becomes even more apparent.
Water based beauty products tend to be more lightweight than oil based products too, meaning you’ll feel more comfortable, natural and fresher throughout the day.
Water based beauty products are designed to be used all year round, not just during the warmer months. They’re also perfect for long term use, giving skin the gentle therapy it needs and deserves over time.
