How to test your water quality at home

In general, people in the UK enjoy a high level of water quality. As @WaterUK notes:
“In the UK our drinking water is of the highest standard, at a record level of quality and among the best in the world. We can turn on our taps with the certainty of a safe, clean and refreshing supply.”
However, occasionally the standard of our drinking water can dip. Whether it’s because of a problem with your supply of H2O or because of the pipes in your property, odd tasting or even unsafe water can make our homes a much less pleasant place to be.
If this happens, you may want to test the quality of your water. A good way to put your mind at ease and help you understand exactly what you’re putting in your body, testing your home water can help you get to grips with your essential services.
Why test your water?
In the UK, there are strict rules in place to ensure that the water that comes into our homes is 100% safe to drink. However, just because it’s safe, doesn’t mean it necessarily tastes all that great. If you’ve noticed that your water has a strange taste or an odd aroma, testing your water can be a good way to find out what’s going on.
If you live in an old property with worn plumbing, this can be another reason to test your water. Contaminants can easily leach into your water from old, rusty pipes. Over time, these contaminants can begin to build up in your body, potentially having an adverse effect on your health. Testing your water will help you to work out exactly what’s getting into your system and what you need to do to stop it.
Testing your water at home
If you think there might be a problem with your water, you can get a home testing kit from the internet or from a local company that offers good quality kits. Although the results won’t be as in depth or as comprehensive as lab testing, they should still give you a good idea of the main contaminants in your water and the composition of the H2O itself.
How to improve the quality of your water
If your water has a funny taste or a bad odour, you may well find that installing a purification filter helps to improve the quality of your H2O. These filters remove a lot of the impurities from the water, leaving you with a supply that’s clean, clear and, importantly, tastes great.
