How water filters can help you save money

Living in hard water areas can make drinking tap water an unpalatable task. It’s also not always the healthiest option, considering the variety of minerals in the water. That’s where water filters come in – a little attachment can make a big difference.
Here at Total Soft Water, we want everyone to experience the benefits of a simple water filter that will help you in getting the best drinking water possible.
Many people in the UK are aware of better options for drinking water. This is why, on average, we consume more bottled water than tea. As far back as 2008, Brits were spending nearly £2 billion per year on the likes of Evian and Perrier water.
In a report by British Bottled Water, data revealed that our bottled water consumption was increasing year-by-year. Approximately 1,514 million litres of it was consumed in 2008. By 2016, that number had risen to 2,616 million litres.
Water Filters: The Great Money Saver
Water filters are a great money saver. The primary reason we buy bottled water is the allure of freshness. Unfortunately, this is actually a marketing technique employed by water companies. By investing in a filter, you can actually enjoy water just as ‘fresh’ as that from a bottle.
There are some surprising and disturbing facts about bottled water, as Dawn Gifford of Small Footprint Family writes:
“Although many people believe bottled water to be healthier than tap water, the truth is, bottled waters are not subject to nearly the same level of scrutiny and regulation, and the federal government does not mandate that bottled water be any safer than tap water. In fact, the chemical pollution standards for bottled water and tap water are nearly identical, and most bottled water brands are just filtered tap water anyway.”
Choosing the Right Filter
There are number of water filters to choose from. The choice you make will be determined by the levels of toxins or minerals in your tap water. As we recently highlighted, there are a few ingenious ways of testing your water.
Once tested, you’ll be aware of just what type of filter you’ll need. Our list below should help you define which one.
- Reverse osmosis filtration systems – If you want to invest in something good, knowing that a lump sum will give you years of clean and toxin free water, then this is the one for you. The reverse osmosis filter system is designed to remove fluoride, arsenic, lead, chlorine, VOCs and a bevy of other toxins found in tap water.
- Water Distillers – Using a boiling method, water distillers help to eradicate bacteria, cysts and heavy metals.
- Aluminum Oxide Filter – Although requiring frequent cartridge changes, the aluminum oxide filter is great for helping to seriously reduce fluoride and arsenic.
- Carbon Block Gravity Filters – A very specific filter that helps to remove pathogenic bacteria, cysts and parasites and even extract harmful chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides.
