12 tips for drinking more water in the summer

As the temperature increases in the normally grim and dreary UK, the British tend to celebrate by visiting parks and beaches across the country. While the warm weather is certainly to be enjoyed, it’s important to remember that the summer also brings a higher risk of dehydration. In order to make sure that you drink an adequate amount of water this summer, take heed of the following tips.
1 – Purchase a refillable container
If you have a refillable water container with you at all times, you will always be reminded to take a swig. If you’re out at the park, you can always top up on some free water at one of the local water fountains, or if you’re simply relaxing in your garden, take a trip to the kitchen for a refill. Carrying a container is also recommended for the office, gym, and social events too!
2 – Edible water
Did you know that certain fruits and vegetables have very high water content? For instance, cucumber has a water content of 96%! Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables during the summer is highly recommended to help you stay hydrated.
3 – Download a water intake tracker
These days, there are plenty of ingenious smartphone applications which can be used to track your daily water intake. Check out Waterlogged which can be downloaded from the iTunes store. Since most people carry their phones with them wherever they go, applications such as these are extremely useful in the summer, particularly if you’re undertaking physical exercise or are at higher risk of dehydration.
As Nicole Mcdermott states while writing for Greatist:
“Staying hydrated while exercising is important because of the added sweat loss (compared to day-to-day activities like working at a desk or watching TV). Tossing back some H2O while working out can also help us fight fatigue and prolong endurance.”
4 – Set an alarm
If you’re a forgetful person who often struggles to drink enough water every day, simply set alarms on your phone at regular intervals. Each time the alarm goes off, have a swig from your refillable water container. Use the alarm that goes off to wake you up in the morning as the first time in the day to have some water, because staying hydrated first thing will help you to have a more productive day. There are even apps designed specifically for this purpose.
5 – Try carbonated water
If you’re bored of drinking still water every day, make things a bit different by drinking carbonated water. The taste can be an acquired one, but the more you drink, the more you’ll get used to it!
6 – Make your water more flavoursome
If plain water just doesn’t cut it for you, add some healthy natural ingredients such as citrus fruits to spice things up. Cucumber, strawberries and mint are also awesome additions which will make your glass of water far more palatable.
7 – Keep a jug of water by your bed
In the summer, the nights can get very humid, which is why you should endeavour to stay hydrated while you sleep. The easiest way to do this is to keep a jug of water by your bed so you can always reach over and pour yourself a glass at any time of the night. By staying hydrated throughout the night, you might be pleasantly surprised to see how much better you feel when you wake up in the morning!
